約伯記1:6說

約伯記1:6說，有一天，神的眾子來侍立在耶和華面前，撒但也來在其中。這裡所說的眾子，不是指人的眾子，是指著神的眾天使而言。而「撒但也來」，但顯然，它與神的眾子無關，因它是個墮落的天使，雖然經常上到天庭，只不過圖謀破壞神的兒女之信心罷了（伯1:6，2:1）。

Job 2:1 Again there was a day when the sons of God (angels) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan (adversary, accuser) also came among them to present himself before the Lord .- AMP

撒但為什麼能出現在那裡，也成為我們的疑問。

值得留意的是「撒但」一語（直譯是「控告者」）在希伯來原文中是有定冠詞的（相當於英語的 “the”）。因此在約伯記中，這字似乎是表達一個功能，不是名字。

約伯記中的仇敵雖然很可能就是後來被稱為撒但的那位，這一點卻不能有肯定的結論。

希伯來語中「撒但」（satan）一詞是用來形容仇敵，人類和超自然的活物都包括在內。即使是耶和華的使者也可以執行這功能（民32:22）。這字眼要到兩約之間的時代（具體一點來說，是主前第二世紀），才有了作為名字的用法。作為仇敵者的角色通常是監視或挑戰神的政策或決定。究竟撒但是否神的眾子（NIV：「天使」）之一，卻不清楚。撒但原是墮落的天使長，或說離本位的天使。
