In 1490 there were two good friends, Albrecht Durer and Franz Knigstein, both were struggling young artists. Since they were both poor, they worked to support themselves while they studied art. The time spent in making a living took away a lot of their time, both were progressing very slowly. However, they just could not make enough money to eat and pay for their rent plus pay for art school.  They finally agreed that one would have to work full time to help the other to finish school. And when one finished school he would work and pay for the other to finish school. They agreed to cast lots. Durer won , he would continue full time schooling while Knigstein worked  very hard to make a living for both.

Durer went to different cities in Europe. As the world recognized Durer not only for his special gifts, he was full of talent. Durer became famous as an artist and was very successful. He remembered his promise to his friend and returned to send Knigstein to art school

When he returned to help his friend, he soon learned the large price that his friend had paid for him to attend school. Knigstein had worked so hard that his fingers had become stiff and twisted. His slender, sensitive hands had been ruined for life. He could never become an artist, as was his dream.  He was not bitter but rejoiced in the success of his friend. He was very glad that he was able to help Durer become a successful artist.

One day the artist came upon his friend unexpectedly and found him kneeling with his twisted hands in prayer. Albrecht Durer, the great artist, hurriedly sketched what he saw and painted the masterpiece, ‘THE PRAYING HANDS.’.

Today, around the world, many of Durer’s art paintings are being displayed  in the art galleries. “THE PRAYING HANDS’ will remind you of the great friendship, the spreading of love, sacrifice, hard work and gratitude.

The painting also reminds the world that prayers are not only for yourself. When you lift up your hands to pray for others, comforting thoughts, encouragement and strength will come to you and all other people..
